Training for Health Professionals
Why help people stop smoking?
Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the UK. One in two long-term smokers will die as a result of their addiction. Exposure to second-hand smoke (passive smoking) also carries health risks; including lung disease, heart disease and cancer in adults. Risks to babies and children include glue ear, respiratory problems and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDs).
Quitting smoking is the single best action someone can take to improve not only their own health but the overall health of their families and those around them.
Stop smoking advice and support is a life-saving intervention!
What training does Quit4Life offer and who is it for?
Quit4Life offers a range of training, according to the needs of each individual and their organisation.
The training we currently offer includes:
Very Brief Advice Training: Suitable for anyone who comes into contact with smokers. This session aims to provide staff with the confidence to raise the issue of smoking, and guidance on how to make a quality referral to Quit4Life for support. This training can be modified to meet the needs of service requirements, but usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes. We require a minimum number of 6 delegates for this session. For individual needs please access the NCST online training, or contact us on 0845 602 4663 / 01252 335 120 for more information.
Level 1, Brief Intervention Training is an accredited 1-2 hour course aimed at helping health professionals to speak with confidence to their clients/patients about smoking, and to refer them to Quit4Life for help to quit. The training can be tailored to suit any speciality. Please contact us for further details.
Level 1 Plus Training, Mental Health and SmokeFree (1 day) aims to provide Southern Health staff with the skills to support patients who are being cared for within a smoke-free hospital. Please log in to LEaD to view the course outline (course code: SH-FTFCT1702) and to book your place, or contact us if you have any further queries.
Level 2, Smoking Cessation Training (6 modules over 3 days) is designed specifically for those who can commit to delivering complete stop smoking programmes within their current roles. Please see further details of Level 2 training, including eligibility, venues and dates, or contact us to book.
The Refresher module is to be undertaken by Level 2-trained advisers every 12 months.
The NCSCT has produced an online training module entitled 'E-cigarettes: a guide for healthcare professionals'. We highly recommend taking part in this free online training.
