Helen, 67, from Alton, started smoking in 1965 as many of her friends smoked at the time. However, as time went on, Helen started suffering from several health problems: “I smoked about 80 rollups a day. I was finding it hard to breathe. I had a lung infection and I wasn’t feeling very happy.”
Helen heard about Quit4Life’s stop smoking service through her doctor, and managed to give up for good with help from the Practice Nurse at her local surgery who is a trained Quit4Life Smoking Cessation Adviser. “I just said to my daughter that I’ve had enough of fags. She said that if I stop she will stop too so we both went along.”
Helen felt that, by taking advantage of Quit4Life’s NHS stop smoking service, she wasn’t alone. “My Quit4Life adviser told me exactly what to do. I had backup there”.
Both Helen and her daughter both successfully gave up cigarettes on 13th December 2016 and have not looked back since. In fact, Helen has booked her first holiday since quitting smoking: “Before I couldn’t go on a bus or train or plane as I had to stop the car and have a fag about every 15 minutes. Now I’ve got more money to spend, I can go out for a meal and I am not so out of breath. Also my clothes don’t smell, the house smells nice and I can taste my food and drink.”
Helen’s top tips for other quitters include drinking a lot of water and sucking on a lolly pop to help with the cravings, as well as staying positive: “I kept on to myself that I don’t need them [the cigarettes].”
And her advice for others who are thinking about quitting? “Just go for it – you’ve got nothing to lose.”
Well done to Helen and her daughter for successfully kicking the habit!
